Description:

Doctors are in unique positions due their skill set, and are obligated to talk about death and advance planning with their patients, even those whose death is not immediately imminent.

In 2014, White et al (MJA 2014; 201: 1-4) stated in regards to Doctors’ knowledge of the law on withholding & withdrawing life-sustaining medical treatment:

“For medical professionals, criminal responsibility could arise for murder or manslaughter (where treatment is withheld or withdrawn unlawfully) or for assault (where treatment is provided without appropriate consent or authorisation). A lack of legal knowledge will not excuse a medical professional from liability. Claims of civil liability may also flow from such actions, along with disciplinary or coronial proceedings.”

This workshop will appeal to geriatricians, general practitioners; psychiatrists and old age Psychiatrists, Intensivists, Palliative care specialists; intellectual disability specialists and anyone interested in meeting ACHS Standard 11.
